NPR reports that since 1901, 862 Nobel Prizes have been awarded, but only 43 have gone to women. Plus 90% of Nobel laureates are from the USA, Canada or Europe. Since the 1970s, women tend to be awarded the peace prize but they are largely absent in other science categories. Judith Hicks Stiehm, author of “Champions for Peace: Women Winners of the Nobel Prize for Peace” says that it was actually a woman, contessa Bertha von Suttner, who persuaded Nobel to introduce the peace prizes. So how inclusive is science’s greatest honour if it denies women’s achievements and ignores the contribution of “non-Western” researchers?
