Soumya is a Mongolian former singer in her late 70s. She has lived as a herder in the countryside and has a reputation in her local area as being the best herder. She’s renowned for her skills of raising baby animals.
Soumya has eleven children and has been given medals by the Socialist government after the births of her fourth and sixth children.
She tells documentary maker Dimitri Staszewski that her singing skills once drew more respect from children in the area who would wait outside her house listening to the adults singing. After hearing this recording she said, “That’s exactly what I thought it sounded like.”
