New on my blog: The Abbott Government in Australia has previously stated it does not believe in climate change and it has significantly withdrawn funding for this line of research. A recent change on the Department of Environment’s website has removed a reference to the link between extreme weather conditions and climate change. This is a dangerous stance given the scientific evidence on how bushfires and other extreme weather events impact communities in Australia. I discuss the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change who show the importance of public education on climate change and its impact on extreme weather. I also detail the sociological research on how vested economic interest and political ideology shape climate change denial. My focus is on the sociological consequences on sustainable planning and community resilience (the knowledge, resources and planning necessary to deal with extreme events).
