Narrow Narratives for Women of Colour

The same situation, reframed through racism. White women’s fertility choices are seen as normal and welcome, though there’s still a focus on children as a defining feature of a woman’s identity. For women of colour, child rearing and career choices are suspected to be deviant. “Is that your son?” “Are you the first person in your family to go to college?” “Is the father still in the picture?”

In both situations, women are routinely judged, but for women of colour, the presumption is that she lacks control of her sexuality and that she is uneducated by default.
