“When we focus on the individual, or the individual instance of racism, we actually miss out on looking at society and how it continues to perpetuate these sorts of structures that discriminate against these groups of people… We seem very keen to pin it on individual people rather than actually re-imagining a society that exists and doesn’t elevate these sorts of dialogues.”
Celeste Liddle is an Arrernte feminist who discusses the radicalisation of white men in Australia. White supremacists are politically emboldened to perpetuate racism due to our structural processes. Liddle reflects on why she resists changing the date of Australia Day – she says the day fundamentally erases the genocidal violence that led to the foundation of Australia.
She argues it’s more productive to continue fighting this “cultural amnesia.”
She covers other issues, such as the need for a Treaty, and the way Indigenous women are disempowered from decision-making and policy on violence against women.
