A new study shows women with “Muslim” names have to send 1.4 times as many job applications as women with Anglo-sounding names to be considered by employers, and women in hijab need to send 4.5 times as many applications.
The study sent out a fake CV to 1,500 employers. The CVs all contained the same information, including the photo of the same woman, changing only the name in three variations: a German name, “Sandra Bauer,” in one set of applications, and the other two applicants had a Turkish name, “Meryem Öztürk,” though one of the Meryems wore a headscarf. Turkish people are the biggest migrant group in Germany. Sending a photo with a CV is common in Germany.
These findings continue the pattern of racism in recruitment well documented in other studies. In Australia, migrant and Indigenous candidates face overwhelming employment discrimination. Similarly, multiple studies in the USA show entrenched racism, with recent research reflecting the same trend as nearly 20 years ago.
